Happy Birthday in Swiss German: What to Say in Zürich

October 2026

← All posts

To say “happy birthday” in Swiss German, say Alles Gueti zum Geburtstag! Among friends, shorten it to Alles Gueti zum Geburi! These are the Zürich-based forms, and they sit close to Standard German Alles Gute zum Geburtstag. The giveaway is Gueti for Gute.

This post gives the wishes to use, how near they are to everyday speech, what we can and cannot say about other dialects, and two customs that catch newcomers out.

Happy birthday wishes in Swiss German

Swiss GermanMeaning and use
Alles Gueti zum Geburtstag!Happy birthday! The full form.
Alles Gueti zum Geburi!Happy birthday! Casual, among friends.
Alles Gueti zum Geburtstag, liebe Marco!Happy birthday, dear Marco!
Gratulation!Congratulations! For good news of any kind.
Härzlichi Gratulation!Heartfelt congratulations!
Häppy BirthdayThe English wish, also in use.

How close is this to what people really say?

Very close, and Geburi shows why. It is the short, friendly word for a birthday, and it is not only slang: a City of Zürich leaflet for schools and parents has recipes for Geburibrötli and Geburisandwiches. A Swiss news site has used it in a headline, too. When viewers wished a presenter a happy 50th in a Swiss public television chat in 2019, some wrote zum Geburi and others plain Standard German, side by side. Some used Gratulation.

That mix is normal, because the Swiss speak dialect and write Standard German. On a card for a colleague, Alles Gute zum Geburtstag is fine. Dialect belongs in a message to a friend, spelled however it sounds to you, since Swiss German has no official spelling.

Happy birthday in Zürich, Bern and beyond

The forms above are the Zürich-based ones our app, Grüezi, teaches. For other regions we have no birthday wish we can stand behind. The app’s dialect table has no row for it, and we found none in a dictionary or other reliable reference, so we are leaving them out rather than guessing.

What we can show is how similar words shift. Bern turns an l at the end of a syllable into a u sound, as in Miuch for Milch, so listen for it in alles. Wallis says Gueta Nacht where Zürich says Guet Nacht, and Luzern says Ä Guetä! where Zürich says En Guete! Expect the same wish in local sounds. Our post on Zürich and Bern German has more.

Two birthday customs to know

Wait for the day. Wishing someone a happy birthday early is considered bad luck, so save it for the day itself.

You bring the cake. In Switzerland the birthday person brings the treat. At work that means cake, Gipfeli or a Zopf for the team at Znüni, the morning break, so do not wait to be surprised. The sentence to know is Ich bring de Geburtstagschueche sälber mit, “I’ll bring the birthday cake myself.” Children do it too: the Zürich leaflet is all about the Geburtstagsznüni at school.
