Let's be honest: Thai is not the easiest language to pick up. The script looks beautiful but completely foreign. There are 44 consonants, 32 vowels, 5 tones, and a writing system that doesn't use spaces between words. If that sounds intimidating — we get it. Friends learning Thai tell us the same thing.

That's why we built Sawasdee — a Thai learning app that breaks everything down into small, manageable steps and makes the whole journey feel more like a game than a textbook.

Start with the building blocks

Many Thai courses stay with phrases for a long time. "Hello" is sawasdee, "thank you" is khòp khun — great, but you still can't read a single word on a menu. Sawasdee starts with those polite basics for one unit, then goes straight to the alphabet.

Unit 2 brings all 44 consonants, unit 3 the long and short vowels, unit 4 blends them into your first words, and unit 5 adds the five tones. Each unit is four short lessons — reading, writing, listening and speaking — with quizzes, matching games and stroke-by-stroke tracing along the way. By the time you move on, those characters feel familiar — not scary.

Spaced repetition does the heavy lifting

The secret sauce behind Sawasdee is spaced repetition. It's a learning technique where you review material at increasing intervals — just as you're about to forget it. Daily review brings back the words from your lessons at growing intervals, just before you would forget them, so your study time goes where it is needed.

A few minutes a day is enough to keep the review going, and short, regular sessions are exactly what spaced repetition is built for.

From consonants to conversations

Sawasdee doesn't stop at the alphabet. The course is 100 units in five levels, from your first letter (Pre-A1) to B1, and as you progress you'll work through vocabulary, grammar, and reading practice. The goal is to take you from "what is this squiggle?" all the way to reading Thai signs, menus, and messages — step by step.

We also included XP, a stamp for every unit, and a daily rhythm to keep things fun. There's something deeply satisfying about watching your rhythm calendar fill up, and it's a gentle nudge to keep coming back even on days when you're not feeling motivated.

Built for focus

Sawasdee has no social features, no feeds, and no distractions. It's just you and the Thai language. Lessons, words and audio are all inside the app, so you can learn offline (only the optional speech check may need a connection). Your progress stays on your device, and there are no ads interrupting your flow.
